Recreational Sports Insurance: Policy Options for Sports Organizations and Facilities

Sports and recreational activities are fun -and exciting for everyone who is involved!

But when it comes to sports and recreational events, accidents can occur anywhere –and at any time. If you have a sports or recreational facility, it’s important to ensure that you have enough coverage to protect you and your employees as well as your guests. It is up to the sports organization to take out a policy that will at least cover the basics, so finding a policy that works for your organization is important.

While you may already have a liability coverage policy for your facility, it’s important to make sure that you have a comprehensive policy that provides enough coverage in case something were to go wrong. Making sure everyone in your organization is covered is important.

There are several main categories when it comes to recreational sports insurance. These coverage options are an important part of hosting sports or recreational activities.

General Liability
Legal defense is an expensive part of sports litigation. It is not unheard of for legal defense costs to exceed $50,000. General liability covers in the event of a lawsuit due to negligence, for bodily injury or property damage. Be sure you are covered incase damage or injury is caused by any volunteers or directors as well.

Accident Liability
Accident liability insurance provides coverage in the event of an accident. When it comes to recreational sports, accidents are going to occur, and it is best to be prepared and covered before it happens. Accident liability covers the medical bills and procedures on the behalf on the injured.

Directors and Officers Insurance
Directors and officers insurance covers your company and your directors against legal costs from lawsuits alleging bodily harm or property damage due to the negligence of the company’s senior management.

Property Damage
Damage done to the property, or premises could be covered under this policy. In many cases, premises coverage is in a separate policy, so be sure to ask your insurance agent if you are covered.

Workers’ Compensation
Like any company, if your sports or recreational organization has employees, it’s a good idea to consider taking out a workers’ compensation policy. Workers’ compensation pays for an injured employee’s medical expenses, as well as a portion of their lost wages.

Be sure to talk with your insurance agent to ensure you are covered with the right policies. Depending on your facility and organization, you may need an additional policy in order to ensure you are adequately covered. Fire damage, for example, is often covered under a separate policy.

You agent will be able to recommend policies that are specific to your needs. For more information on sports or recreational insurance, contact Texas Outdoor Insurance today: (281) 398-1010 or toll free at: (877) 952-1010.
